For your submissions to be considered, you must abide by the following rules:

  • Submit on Time: The deadline for submissions is the 1st of the month of publication at midnight. Issues will be published on equinoxes and solstices, so for example if the issue will be published on the March equinox, submissions will only be accepted until the end of February, and anything submitted in March will be considered for the issue being published in June.
  • Create on Theme: The theme for the following issue will be announced on the submission deadline of the previous issue, generally a single word or phrase. The connection to the theme can be deep or superficial, or even interpretive, but the piece must fit the issue.
  • Stay Under the Limit: Prose must be 15000 words or fewer, and poetry must be 750 lines or fewer. A maximum of 10 pieces will be considered per person, be it poetry, prose, illustration or photography. If more is wanted we will request it.
  • Be Original: All works must be submitted by its creator or someone with the creator’s legal permission to act on their behalf, such as an agent. All works must be previously unpublished. One instance of plagiarism will result in the submission’s disqualification and a warning. Two instances of plagiarism will result in the submitter’s disqualification from future consideration.
  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted but we request to be informed as early as possible if a submission is accepted elsewhere and must be withdrawn.

  • All publishing rights revert to the author upon publication.
  • Shield & Seaway requests acknowledgement and citation as first publisher upon reprint in subsequent publications of all work that has appeared in its issues.
